ELEANOR HALL: The National Football League in the United States has suspended a player and his team has sacked him after a video exposed him punching his wife unconscious in a hotel elevator.
Former Baltimore Ravens player, Ray Rice, will have to apply to be reinstated into the NFL if he is ever to play again.

JANE COWAN: The grainy video, published online, shows Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice punching his then fianc and now wife Janay Palmer.

The popular 27 year old footballer was charged with assault in March, but after Janay Rice declined to testify against him, charges were reduced to court supervised counselling.
Rice himself has repeatedly admitted his actions were inexcusable.

JANE COWAN: When the incident first came to light, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who has wide discretion to penalise players for violating cheap mlb jerseys the league’s personal conduct policy, suspended Rice for two games, later admitting he hadn’t got the punishment right.
In response to the backlash, the league introduced a new domestic violence policy.
First time offenders now face a six game suspension.
A second offence draws a lifetime ban.
Today, advocates for victims of domestic violence called on the commissioner to revisit the Rice case in light of the new footage.
And, within hours, both the team and the NFL commissioner acted, the Baltimore Ravens letting Rice go and the NFL suspending him indefinitely.

CLINTON YATES: Both Ray and his then fianc admitted to the police what happened in the elevator, meaning, they knew the facts.
It shouldn’t have to be backed up by video evidence in order to indefinitely suspend the guy.
They knew what happened; they made and assessment; they only went with two games to start with, then all of a sudden, Roger Goodell says, oh, my bad. That was not quite the thing to do.
Again, they knew what had happened. It should not have taken the terrible optics that it was in that perfectly horrifying video in order to force them to force their hand.
Once you know something like that goes down, you have to suspend the guy immediately.
It just, the message it sends to America about the abuse of women, the abuse in domestic violence in this country is outrageous if you’re just going to say, hey look, now that we’ve seen it, we know.
He said it. He said as much.
CNN sports reporter Rachel Nichols says if the league takes him back he’ll play again.
RACHEL NICOLS: If a guy can play, somebody will put him on the field. There is no doubt about that.
The rest of this will not impact his playing career if he is allowed back in the league and people think he can play.
